a link, design korea 2010
Link is a reactive space which requests and shares your story with others. By inputting videos of yourself into the installation, we build up a scene representing the presence of everybody within the exhibition.
We converge everyday materials with developing technology to create a social experience for the attendees and contributors to Design Korea 2010.

muti randolph’s deep screen
Muti Randolph’s Deep Screen installation was such a big hit at our events last year, so when we decided to enrich the experience of Coachella’s Sahara dance tent, we knew exactly who to turn to.
Watch Muti prepare his masterpiece, and hear him explain how music plays a different role in this installation than it has in previous works. The presentation looks seamless, but the technology behind it is actually quite complex.

trimensional 3-D scanner iPhone app
Grant Schindler, research scientist in Georgia Tech’s College of Computing, created Trimensional, the first app that allows users with an iPhone 4 or recent iPod Touch to take 3-D scans of faces or other objects and share them by e-mail.
Now in the latest update, users can also e-mail animated videos of their 3-D models. For a few dollars more, artists and designers can even export their creation to CAD programs or 3-D applications, such as Maya.
Schindler took an idea he developed while a student at Georgia Tech and with the help of Tech’s business incubator, the Advanced Technology Development Center, has turned it into a real product.

yugoslavia monuments
These structures were commissioned by former Yugoslavian president Josip Broz Tito in the 1960s and 70s to commemorate sites where WWII battles took place (like Tjentište, Kozara and Kadinjača), or where concentration camps stood (like Jasenovac and Niš). They were designed by different sculptors (Dušan Džamonja, Vojin Bakić, Miodrag Živković, Jordan and Iskra Grabul, to name a few) and architects (Bogdan Bogdanović, Gradimir Medaković…), conveying powerful visual impact to show the confidence and strength of the Socialist Republic. In the 1980s, these monuments attracted millions of visitors per year, especially young pioneers for their “patriotic education.” After the Republic dissolved in early 1990s, they were completely abandoned, and their symbolic meanings were forever lost.
From 2006 to 2009, Kempenaers toured around the ex-Yugoslavia region (now Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, etc.) with the help of a 1975 map of memorials, bringing before our eyes a series of melancholy yet striking images. His photos raise a question: can these former monuments continue to exist as pure sculptures? On one hand, their physical dilapidated condition and institutional neglect reflect a more general social historical fracturing. And on the other hand, they are still of stunning beauty without any symbolic significances.

the hole in the lake
The Ladybower Reservoir, Derbyshire, England is reportedly the world’s largest Bell-mouth spillway. It was completed shortly after the end of World War II, when it was opened by King George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth. It was primarily built to supply drinking water to the north of England and the midlands.
The Ladybower Reservoir has two totally enclosed bellmouth overflows (locally named the ‘plugholes’) made from stone with diameter of about 80 feet which tapers to about 15 feet at its exit located at the base of the dam. The overflows originally had walkways around them but they were dismantled many years ago. The area is now a popular tourist location, with the Fairholmes visitors’ centre located at the northern tip of Ladybower.
typography in 8 bits: system fonts
My love of typography originated in the 80′s with the golden years of 8-bit home computing and their 8×8 pixel monospaced fonts on low-resolution displays.
here you can find a collection of those fonts…

porsche museum
The Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen, Germany is nothing short of mind blowing. The ultra-clean, super-minimal building houses over 80 exhibits chronicling the auto-maker’s rise to prominence. The whole thing leans pretty futuristic, would have liked to have seen a few classic cues here and there, but I’m certainly not complaining. Has anyone been yet? Looks like a must-see if you’re anywhere near Stuttgart.

play with fractals right now
Fractal Lab a WebGL 3D fractal explorer by subblue
Created by Tom Beddard aka subblue, Fractal Lab is a WebGL based web application for rendering 2D and 3D fractals in real-time and the latest in Tom’s research in complex and visually stunning 3D fractal structures. As we already reported few months back, Tom already created some truly stunning works (see bottom of the post) using the Adobe Pixel Bender Toolkit and working with Photoshop, After Effects and Quarz Composer. This time, Tom’s fractals run in your browser with ability to explore and loose yourself in these magnificent structures.
You will need a WebGL enabled browser, currently Google Chrome or Firefox 4 beta are the best choices, and a reasonably modern graphics card.
